Barn hides hi-tech secret
Reproduced with kind permission of the Great
Yarmouth Mercury
A country barn at Winterton hides a hi-tech firm turning out precision
parts for racing cars.
Behind the roar of highly-tuned engines that race around the circuits
all over the world is a team of engineers who have been making parts
for nearly 24 years
C H Martin Engineering has carried out work for teams competing in
Indy car racing, Formula One, Formula 3000 and Formula Sport including
Benetton, Team Lotus, Pacific and Simtek.
Started by the late Colin Martin in 1976, the business now has some
of the most up to date computerised equipment available, which is
used to make seat belt brackets, engine mounts and many other small
but vital parts.
Although most of the work done is for cars and motorcycles, other
projects have included constructing special drawing equipment for
the Jenny Lind children's hospital in Norwich.
Most of the parts are made of titanium which is very light but very
expensive.
The business employs three full time workers.
Carole Martin said her husband had started out on his own in Norfolk
after working for an engineering firm in Slough.
"Basically we do whatever people ask us to do. We work
for oilfield companies and the pharmaceutical industry as well as
on cars and bikes"

Power Drives Performance
Success. Growth. Opportunity. To those of you who
own or manage a business these are words you are vitally interested
in applying.
Most of the time we associate these words with the sales and marketing
of our products or services. Yet while sales and marketing are
indeed essential elements for business growth, technological improvements
can also bring opportunities.
C H Martin Engineering, a Precision Toolmaker and Subcontractor to
the Motor Racing Industry, found success and growth in more ways than
one when they implemented a new software system into their CNC operation.
Established some 27 years ago in Winterton-on-Sea, Norfolk, C H Martin
built a reputation for excellence in manufacturing complex parts for
various Racing Teams. This was accomplished during the first
few years by providing customers with prototypes and parts built to
unusually exacting standards.
It was not always easy though even for a company with talented staff
because racing teams demand the very best quality from their suppliers.
At that time computer numerical control operations and Cad/Cam
Software were in their infancy.
In many ways much of the designing and tooling process was still a
"hands on" process. It was extremely demanding on
the engineering staff and manufacturing process.
Recent developments in CAD/CAM software though gave C H Martin easier
and more simple methods of streamlining this process. The working
environment at their site has always been quality driven. State
of the art engineering software and machining equipment therefore
has kept C H Martin at the forefront of their industry.
Their machining facility provides precision workmanship and rigid
quality control as well as cutting, routing, drilling, milling, turning,
and they are often asked to make plastic injection mould tools.
